New Years Hacking?

There is a big scale rumor heading around RuneScape of over 750,000 accounts which are due to be hacked on New Years Eve.

Here is this text document I’ve been shown of one million accounts listed to be hacked. I am on this list which i feel both excited and nervous about!

I searched the RuneScape forums for any Jagex Moderator responses and it appears most of the Jagex Moderators are already aware of this issue. There are many different responses which I have Screenshots for:

My conclusion:

A hack of this scale is not only insane but enough to get the culprit heavy jail time. Virtual hacking is a federal crime and one of this scale is definitely enough to hit the news.

However the fact that the hacker has announced the names, and many  Jagex Moderators are aware, changes my opinion completely. Being able to slip through the lines of Java Programming would be dangerous enough without having them already aware and expecting you!

I expect this to be a convincing rumor with so many high-leveled accounts listed, However i am still going to bank any expensive items just to help me sleep in peace tonight :P

I recommend everyone to have a bank pin, email address and recovery questions set up as your minimum account security.

      Yeah I’m on the list also. Under Tatu Master. It’s weird though, why not our new user names? from the name change. Ya know. Doubt it will happen. But if it does.. nothing we can do. I STRONGLY SUGGEST, before 12:00… Bank EVERYTHING. Make sure you have a pin, and recovery’s. The bot is supposed to teleport you to Lumbridge, and break you bank PIN. So what i suggest is.. Go to 30+ Wild. And just log out there, with no items.. nothing. Then the bot cannot teleport, (Cant tele after 20 Wilderness) and you’re safe!

        Thanks for the tips. The reason why it is under your original name is because that is the account name you use to log into runescape. Your password is associated with that name, not your display. Hopefully he is just talk.

    Ya know at first I looked at the document and thought it wasn’t in alphabetical order and I thought I was going to have to sit there for a few hours just slowly scrolling through to see if my name was on there! Well after about 15 minutes of scrolling I got down to the alphabetical part -.-
    All I can do is be happy that I found the alphabetical order part before my account got hacked.

    Thanks so much for the post though. I just set my new and improved bank pin along with new recovery questions. Also,I will have nothing left in my inventory or equipped before I got out to party on new year’s eve just to be safe :)

    Ahh, thank god this person isn’t targeting rare names, if he really is dumb enough to try it.

    It looks like the person or bot that got all these account names was looking for total levels. Most of my accounts are high combat level, but a low-ish total level (around 1200), though my friends are lower combat level and higher total level, and listed.

    Also, a level 3 named “Jiblix” is on the list, a level 3 with a very high total level. Of course, this could all be random, though I would’ve expected a few of my throwaways to be on there if it was.

    Thanks for this info, this could help. Just hope Jagex doesn’t get too stupid to blow this off, since their systems are vulnerable.

    Just to make sure for all of you….

    1) After while searching via Google about this vulnerability on Java, some computer (nerd) confirmed me that it’s impossible to break in Jagex databases: it would need the password key (or something) /or if you have virus on that comp, yeah and Jagex has like few hundred comps: GF Marsh,

    2) Next, the RS being hacked account list is a full copy of the Top 1 Millon Players On RS. Like 1100+ Total’s are on that list. Easily copied and pastes to a text list…

    3) Why would he risk it because from this size of hijacking..Man he’s got a life (maybe) Well he’d get like 150 yrs in prison so: GF 2 Marsh

    4) Since the Display Name Update many of us players have changed the name so much that if you try to add his Log-In name: aca. ”The Real Name” it says player unknown, that’s 10 000 players less of that 750k

    5-) Although many J Mods have been busy deleteing these Forum threads just because all the 10 year old players are shitting to their pants right now, many people might think that this deleteing shows that the threat is real?

    5) I’d like to see this whole hijacking happen as none of my usable account are not on that list

    People.. This is an easy calculation: Have A Bank Pin + Recovery Questions= 100% SAFE ACCOUNT

      Only trouble is, new years eve is tomorrow, Bank pins take a week to set, recoveries even longer. But not like thats going to help having them if this does happen. If the hacker can gain access to all these accounts, Im very sure he can just as easily bypass the bank-pin login,

    Get on the IRC server irc.swiftirc.net, and issue /msg HackList !hacked YourRSName. I made this bot a bit quickly just for the lulz; people on my channel saw that some usernames were on the list more than once. We think it’s because it was just a scrape from the highscores’ Overall list, plus an old leaked player moderator list.

    And I figure that this bot is a quicker lookup than loading the text file in your browser, or even downloading it and viewing it in a Notepad-type program.

    Also, there are most likely no holes in the Java programming at Jagex. Get that out of your mind.

    Yes that’s what i tried to tell, would e a miracle to have such a big holes on Java for Jagex and I’m sure they have them sealed. Ctrl + F you can search a name from that list peole.

    My name’s not on their, but i’m scared now – what if the link to that website has a keylogger?
    My friend’s name is on it, but I have a suggestion; just log on before 12:00 ( hack is supposed to start then) and don’t log out for about an hour, then the hacker can’t log in can he/she?

      lol no, just change your pass, what i reccomend is getting on and right at 12 changing it, to fuck with the “bot” that this smart-ass has “come up with”
      i think it’s total bullshit–but to be safe, i already have recoveries..i’m on there..and my best friend irl is. i tell this hacker Gl and GG. if he does get the acc, congratz. all i have to do is lend away my ags for 24 hrs, and i’m save..lol.

    This is kinda dumb…

    1) Some1 said its for the Guineouss World Records, thats fail Number 1
    2) People know who he is, Fail number 2
    3) Jagex can do rollbacks, Fail number 3
    4) He is a idiot for thinking he can do this, fail 4
    5) Jagex knows about it. The biggest fail, they can stop it, they have multiple computers, storing multiple accounts, on multiple databases, they arent all stored on 1 database, so he is a dumb ass

    To Kiba (comment 6923): It’s a text file. It would be rather far-fetched for it to contain a keylogger. If you do access the file linked in this blog post, the administrator of data.fuskbugg.se might get your IP address, though, even if using it to hack your account would prove impractical.

    And as Daniel the Awesome (comment 6929) posted below, “Jagex can do rollbacks, Fail number 3″, a sentiment already echoed by Mike Fitz (comment 6909).

    I’m not at all worried. My guess is that the supposed hacker just linked to that list, compiled by someone else in older highscores, to have a cheap laugh at the expense of gullible folks.

    Useful tidbits of information:

    1. The file is named like it would be a million-user list, but there are 677,556 unique names in the list, out of 766,039 lines. There are 88,483 redundant lines.
    2. There are 609,498 names appearing only once in the list. 48,471 names appear twice. 18,752 names appear 3 times. 832 names appear 4 times. These three players appear 5 times in the list: King Peter12, Timothy Gold, and Zogo. (The creator of this list is seriously noob at removing duplicates.)
    3. You may find your name written with a capital at the start, and again with a lowercase letter at the start. Likewise, you may find your name written with spaces and then with underscores.
    4. Ctrl+F doesn’t work as quickly for names like Zezima, due to people naming themselves Sir Zezima45 or whatever and appearing before the real person in the alphabetical list portion. But Zezima is there, 3 times.
    5. The Old Nite (who died some time ago) is in the list, 3 times. I didn’t know you could hack a permanent banned account.

    In short, nothing to see here, move along. If this hoax wasn’t dead in the water yet, it should be. Spread the word. Thanks. Also, happy New Year! :)

    I heard this roumour going around Twitter saying that there was a ‘list’ of 1 million account names and that they were going to hack them on new years.

    I found the link for this list, but I am unable to post it here as it is against the rules.
    I and a few of my friends are also on this ‘list’ and have taken a few precautionary measures to prevent this ‘hacking’ to happen.

    If you or any of your friends believe that you are more at risk of being hacked, then here are a few precautions that you should consider taking:
    1.) Change your pass to something that is VERY SECURE and difficult to guess.
    2.) Change your Recovery questions so that they cannot be easily guessed by anyone you know.
    3.) change/activate your bank PIN and set the recovery delay to 7 days.

    I’m on the list with no bank pin and 1928 total level. I kind of want to see this happen too, but because I have no bank pin i will just buy an sgs with my cash and lend it out on the day for 24 hours and then lock my account.

    Ive been playing rs for almost 5 years and ive never been hacked.

    1) Keyloggers cannot be on webpages
    2) Runescape has over 50+ computers with all the information of the Runescape Accounts
    3)Java Coding has very few flaws in it, and a compiler (Which Runescape uses) also points out errors. (Experience for 2 years of Virtual Java Coding)
    4)No computer can handle the proccesing of 750 million Runescape accounts be hacked at once, thats like being Santa Clause, 100% fake.
    5)This list would be considered a threat and the maker would be in jail by now.
    6) If you dont believe what im saying use these procaustions:
    - Go to lvl 31 wildy with an amulet of glory or runes to varrock.
    - Change your password at 12:00 excactly (Somepeople say it will happen in EST)
    - Stay logged in untill 1 am
    7)I dont suggest changing or setting your appeal questions because if you are hacked, im sure the hacker would change your email settings, bank pins and recovery questions.
    8) Share this information if you think its smart.

    First of all this is very possible because it is 750,000 accounts, not 750 million. For someone who is so computer savvy they can’t read very well. (Soon to be Jagex Employee :D ) Second, I don’t care HOW well a person wrote a program or if Bill Gates wrote it himself! There is ALWAYS a way to access it and do want you want, from where ever as well (unless the computer is offline) So do be very cautious with you account. My best tip would be to go pull the ardy lever, cut the web, drop the item you used to cut the web and log there. With no items on you of course…

    I really want to know where the list came from.
    I have a very high total level and I’m not on it. I have a lot of low lvl friends who are on it.
    I started my account in Jan 08, but some people who started after me are on it.
    A few banned accounts, which are not on the hiscores, are on the list.

    My account (123 combat) was on the list. However, I don’t have good member skills at all (like not even above 30) and I am seemingly dirt poor. I didn’t get hacked and haven’t heard of anyone who did, and I doubt the list has a keylogger on it. It’s more likely to have a trojan but I scanned it. I am curious about how the list was formed. Vasovasorum has been in existance since 2000, but doesnt have a very high total level. I wonder if it has to do with how old the account is, since Zezima is on there… But maybe not. It could be totally random.

    Well, I’ve looked through the list and I noticed something strange: some people are mentioned two or three times. These people also happen to be very wealthy or have good stats or a fair balance between both. From me and my friend’s speculations we’ve come to the conclusion that these may be ‘priority accounts’. So far, we have three theories.

    NOTE: Please, I haven’t taken any further research about confirming this happening nor did I read all the replies as they are quite the few.

    Theory 1)
    This is the one we hope for: it’s all a big scare-scene, just to scare the heck out of us. Heh, GJ.

    Theory 2)
    The hacker activated the bot and started hacking player that were OFFLINE (meaning; if you were online on ‘your turn’, you would avoid the bot thus saving your account), this bot will continue working until it has been through all the accounts ONCE* and will be done in short time

    Theory 3)
    The hacker activated the bot and started hacking us starting New Years’ Eve and onwards, taking good time and may not finish until summer or later, meaning he will be able to snatch those who were online during New Years’ Eve on his timezone. The bot will continue working until it has been through all the accounts ONCE*.

    *maybe twice or more for ‘priority accounts’

    I do believe this list has an order to it,

    The first couple of names are in alphabetical order, then It goes in an old highscore list, which would explain the double, and triple names.

    I’m not sure about the other names but its 1 January 2010.

    My account was not on the list, my two best friends accounts were, and neither were effected.

    HOAX.

    Listen up, i knew this would have come soonner of latter for a LONG time. I never heard of his hacker dude, so i cant comment on everyone’s knowledge, but, i have entire proof that he DID TRY to hack, but failed. I hosted a new years countdown party on world 31 fally sqaure pacific time. Alot of people were there and everyone felt what happened, when we finished counting down at EXACLY 12 00, everyone in the fally sq lagged for about 10 secs, including me. I had friends who were at lumby at the time who lagged for 15 secs and one was dissconnected (but logged back on). Kk look, this was ENTIRELY NOT a hoax, BUT, he failed at trying to bypass the java progamming language. Jagex knew he was going to try to do this so they must have added a large firewall to protect the servers. I have a group that got knowlege that this was going to happened and even had a anti-hacker to try to protect the jagex servers. Now, we think this is over, but now it just got to his advantage. Jagex now thinks that they won against this idot, and must have put down there large emergency firewall and put back the normal one because of energy the large one must have took up. Now this hacker can develop his bot (if he even has any) and can bypass the protection jagex has. Now, im not saying this will happen, but now the threat is too great. And if you dont belive me, than just watch my RuneScape New Years Countdown Party for proof on channel sirnot1 on youtube, decide for yourself.

    A WOMAN’S breast implants have saved her life after she was caught in the line of fire and shot at point-blank range with a semi-automatic assault rifle.

    The Sun reports Lydia Carranza’s silicone implants took the force of the blow and prevented bullet fragments from reaching her vital organs.

    The dental receptionist was at work in Beverly Hills, Calif., when a gunman burst in and opened fire.

    He first shot dead his wife before turning the gun on Carranza, who was sitting a few feet away.

    Surgeon Dr. Ashkan Ghavami said: “She’s just one lucky woman.

    “The bullet fragments were millimeters from her heart and her vital organs. Had she not had the implant, she might not be alive today.”

    Carranza’s implants took her from a B to a D-cup.

    Alleged gunman Jaime Paredes was charged with murder.
